I just spent a most excellent girls weekend in Asheville, NC with my friend Ana. We journeyed from Florida to the mountains to watch our high school friend get hitched last weekend. Look at this location! It was exciting for two Florida girls to climb a mountain just to watch our friend, another Florida girl, get hitched on top.
Ana and Court get ready for ceremony. Nice wedding spot!
On Friday night, when we were headed to the pre-wedding cocktail party, we came across a raging drum circle in Asheville's town square. Apparently the city has one every Friday night when it's warm out. Old people, young people, mothers with children, some random shirtless dude with a ponytail playing a little flute and dancing like a sprite, every type and stripe was there. It's kind of bonkers. We went right into the center of the circle and it was a hot sweaty mass that smelled like gym socks, so we headed off to Pack's Tavern for the cocktail reception. There was another outdoor music event, which we quickly realized was some sort of Christian gathering. Loved how we went from the heathens to the saved in just a few blocks -- that's how you know you're in a hipster town and in the south. Last night, we went to a bar/venue near our hotel called Jack of the Wood where we saw a band that blew our minds (and our doors off!). The four-piece group is called Now You See Them. Sincere, cute, good lyrics.
Melodicas, kazoos, cajons, acoustic guitars and serious pipes added up to a fantastically full sound. We were delighted to stumble upon them. Hope they come to SoFla one day. Talked to singer/guitar/melodica and smiley blond bombshell Dulci Ellenberger about how much we enjoyed their show. She said that they've tried to book Florida before without getting too far. We should open up our arms and stages to these talented funsters!!
That's what dinner at Early Girl Looks Like
Other cool places that we tried were Early Girl restaurant (look at that ridiculous, delicious meal there -- trout, collard greens, mac and cheese) and the very cool (thanks to Eric!) Thirsty Monk. I can't wait to come home, but I gotta come back to Asheville some time soon. Well, I'm already checked out of my hotel and waiting out the 6 hours until my flight. I guess I should leave this really weird coffee shop that's playing Everclear and head back to Early Girl for one last meal! Oh, by the way, do you know what Asheville people call Floridians? Floridiots! Nice, right? Oh brother, now it's Snow Patrol. I gotta jet.
